What Kind of Leader are You?

Updated: Nov 1, 2024

What kind of leader are you?

I tend to see people in 3 groups.

And since I played and coached basketball, I compare leadership to being a basketball player on offense.

Not Good Players - typically worry about what is directly in front of them or worry about the person that is guarding them. Oftentimes they are bothered by that person and thrown off their game. They’d rather run away from pressure.

Not Good Leaders - typically worry about themselves. Anything that comes in their way usually distracts them. They don’t like pressure or difficult situations. They almost just exist and go through the motions without really making an impact. They sometimes complain and worry about a new policies, are into work gossip, etc.

Okay Players - typically see past the person that is guarding them and are unfazed by the pressure. However, they are focused mostly on what the 4 other defensive players are doing. It is good to have awareness of these other defenders, but it takes away from focusing on your own team.

Okay Leaders - They complete their daily tasks, but when thinking about the big picture they are focused on things other than their team. Oftentimes, they focus too much on outside competitors and worry about other departments. Many times they aren’t in tune with their teammates. They usually keep things status quo.

Excellent Players - The defender guarding them doesn’t bother them. They are aware of what the defense is doing but it doesn’t impact how they want to play offense - if anything they are able to expose the defense. Their focus is on how they fit within their team. They know where their teammates are on the floor. Many times they are talking and communicating on the floor, directing people where to go. They find opportunities for themselves and for their teammates.

Excellent Leaders - They understand what competitors are doing but it only slightly impacts their game plan/strategic plan. They are focused on their department and team, taking a holistic approach knowing where and how each teammate should be best utilized. They set their team and individuals up for success.
