My Emergency Room Lesson

Recently, I had to take a trip to the Emergency Room! 🚑

My wife drove me there, with me on my hands and knees riding on the floor of the pickup with the backseat flipped up.

I was not even able to sit, and only had the ability to walk about 20 steps at a time before crumbling to my knees.

I could hardly move, pain seared from my lower back and all the way down my leg into my foot.

The ER told me what I had already assumed, I had a herniated disc.

And now, after a couple weeks of pain meds, therapy, and taking it very easy, I still have slight pain and numbness in my foot.

Want to know what the worst part about all of this is....?

It's not the pain.

It's not the medical bill that insurance barely covers.

It's not the missed work time.

It's not the frustration of being kind of helpless and not being able to help with house duties.

It's the fact that it was all completely preventable.

Not many husbands or significant others like to admit this.. but if I would have just listening to my wife (Whitney).. 🤣 this probably wouldn't have happened!

For months, maybe even for over a year, she's been telling me to regularly see a chiropractor and find stretches that are good for my back - since I had tightness and minor issues in the past.

This whole situation had me thinking about business, leadership, and trying to live your best life.

There are plenty of things that are preventable, especially in business and operations.

How often are things waved off, pushed to the side, ignored for months, or not maintained?

How often do we brush off poor behavior with people without speaking up or holding them accountable?

How often do we say to ourselves "I'll get to that next week.." when it comes to good habits?

And how often do not doing these things come back to bite us in the *ss?

None of us are going to be perfect.

But it is time to take a hard look, revisit, and think deeply within our personal and professional lives about the things that are preventable, and how little actions decrease the risk.
